grid edit tutorial

so i’ve gotten multiple questions about how I make my grid edits on photoshop cs5 ( http://myhcuse.tumblr.com/post/121413823666/trouble-stripped-halsey ) so I decided to make a tutorial! p.s I apologize if this is sucky this is my first tutorial!

first you want to start off w/ a new canvas. [file>new] these are the settings I used

image

next you want to make a gradient. (you could always go and find one off of google but I like to make my own) so click this gradient tool

image

then click this gradient color thingy on the top toolbar (where my gradient is orange)

image

then this should pop up. select your colors in the order that you want them for the gradient. in this case I am using green.

image

now click ok. now what you want to do is start at the left side of your blank canvas and drag across. a black line should appear. once you have dragged your cursor to the right side of the canvas let go and your gradient should be there.

image
image

next you want to repeat all the steps prior so you have 2 separate gradients. (or however many you are using for your edit)

now you want to create another new canvas. this is where we will be making our grid. these are the setting I use for my grids. (it’s supposed to be small, but you can zoom in to make it bigger)

image

once you have your square, go to [edit>stroke] and this box should pop up. this is what I put my settings as.

image

once you press ok, a black frame type thing should appear around your blank canvas. next you want to go to [image>canvas size] and change your settings to this:

image

now you want go over to the side, right click the layer and select “duplicate layer”

image

start off w/ layer 0, and drag it up. then go to layer 0 copy, and drag it down. you should end up with this:

image

go to your eraser tool and start erasing parts of the black and white until you end up with this “F” sort of shape:

image

now go to [edit>define pattern] then press ok.

now go back to your first gradient. click {layer>new fill layer>pattern} and press ok both times. now you should have this black grid over your gradient.

image

now I will show you how to change the color of the grid (you can keep it black if you want but for the sake of this tutorial I am making mine white)

go to [layer>new fill layer>solid color] on the first pop up menu you want to press ok, and then you select your color then press ok.

next you want to go to the right side, right click your color fill, and select “create clipping mask”

image

you should end up with a grid that’s the color of your choosing over your gradient like this:

image

I am only adding a grid to one of my gradients and keeping the other one plain. now we will add our text. I am using lyrics lyrics from the song “hold me down” by halsey.

for our first layer of text, you will want to use a color similar to the color scheme of our gradient. for this example I will be using yellow.

the font I will be using is Arial, in bold/italic, size 48, and in all caps.

type out your text in that color. you should have something along these lines:

image

now add another set of text using the same lyrics, except this time you want to make the text a different color and put it over your other color. for this edit I am using white. it should come out like this:

image

and that is basically it! do the same to the rest of your images and you’re all set :)

I really really hope this made sense, if not feel free to come to me w/ any questions :)
